Sparkle, Markle and plastic waste

Now sixth in line to the throne, Britain’s Prince Harry has made a name for himself as a champion of good causes, as

, though a commercial for SodaStream, quietly confirms. Its proceeds will go to plastic waste campaigners Surfers Against Sewage, one of the seven charities chosen by the 33-year-old prince and his American fiancée Meghan Markle to be recipients of donations instead of wedding gifts.

Surfers against Sewage is a long-term campaigner against plastic waste, with this campaign part of their awareness efforts.

The popular couple said in a statement on the royal website that they wanted to share the “generosity of spirit” they have experienced by naming causes which reflect their shared values.

The younger son of Prince Charles and Diana, Princess of Wales has come a long way in the public perception since his more infamous escapades such as attending a party in a Nazi outfit, and is now renowned for his charitable work. He served in the Army for ten years, rising to the rank of Captain and undertaking two tours in Afghanistan.

With Harry and Meghan about to exchange vows, brands from Lego building blocks to Tyrrell’s crisps were pulling out the stops to get in on the action.

The SodaStream sparkler stands out for uniting the branding idea with a call to action on the very urgent issue of plastic waste. And even if you’re not a monarchist, well, you may want to hand it to the royal couple for ensuring that the money raised went to a good cause.
